Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week and the theme of the year is to be Healthy: Inside and Out. Looking after bodies and minds is a message very much in keeping with the benefits UK schools report back to us they experience with classroom standing desks.
Pupils actively look forward to classes with flexible seating options and can move more freely and express themselves confidently. Active pupils are reportedly more productive and more likely to engage the lesson. Good mental health we believe is essential to fostering an environment suitable for learning and allowing our children to be well rounded and happy.
We recently reported on the National Association of Physical Literacy who advocate children taking ownership of their own health journeys and their own physical health.
Whilst bringing physical literacy into the classroom is important, equally so is good mental health. Place2Be is a children’s mental health charity providing guidance and a support framework to hundreds of schools across England, Scotland and Wale. They operate the Place2Be Wellbeing in Schools Awards and provide school, parent and carer resources. Their website is linked below.
When we think about healthy living, we tend to focus on looking after our bodies – our physical wellbeing – through food, being active and getting enough sleep.
However, in order to be healthy overall, it’s important that we look after our minds – our mental wellbeing – too. Our bodies and minds are actually very closely linked, so things that we do to improve our physical wellbeing can help our mental wellbeing as well.
Children in every class have diagnosed mental health conditions and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement.
The week is designed to remind teachers and students the importance of remembering to make time to have healthy minds as well as healthy bodies.
